"ON THE HUNT" PROBES THE HISTORY OF ONE OF WISCONSIN'S MOST IMPORTANT TRADITIONS
"Robert Willging tells the fascinating story of the white-tailed deer: its natural history from prehistoric time to present-day management controversies. It is the most comprehensive and enjoyable treatise of the white-tailed deer that I've seen. Whether you are an avid hunter or enjoy seeing the graceful whitetail, reading 'On the Hunt' is a must. Once you start it you won't put it down." —Mike Dombeck, Former Chief, U.S. Forest Service; UW System Fellow and Professor of Global Conservation, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Coming December 2008 from the Wisconsin Historical Press, Robert C. Willging's "On the Hunt: the History of Deer Hunting in Wisconsin" (ISBN: 978-0-87020-405-0; Hardcover; $26.95) offers an informative and entertaining account of a quintessential Wisconsin pastime. Deer Hunting is a tradition that links the earliest Wisconsinites to the men and women living in Wisconsin today. "On the Hunt" weaves personal anecdotes, newspaper and magazine accounts, archival research, insights gleaned from historical, anthropological, and conservation literature to provide the most complete survey of deer hunting in Wisconsin ever written.
"On the Hunt" will appeal to both gun hunters and bow hunters, detailing the development of various types of hunting technology and the changes in hunting ethics that have accompanied the use of that technology. As the book examines the ever-changing relationship between humans and nature, Willging details how logging, farming, urban sprawl, scientific game management, and the advent of chronic wasting disease (CWD) have impacted the number of deer in Wisconsin and mediated human contact with the animal. "On the Hunt" will also shed light on the almost mystical appeal that deer hunting holds for all those who put on blaze orange each fall and head out to their favorite Wisconsin hunting spots.
ROBERT C. WILLGING is a freelance outdoors writer whose work has appeared in such publications as "Boundary Waters Journal," "Deer and Deer Hunting," "High Country News," "Wisconsin Natural Resources," and "Wisconsin Outdoor News."
