Secondary level teachers who want to engage their students in the process of historical thinking–developing questions, gathering data, analyzing and interpreting evidence–will find this instructional kit especially helpful.

Let's face it: Identifying primary source materials in research libraries and archives for classroom instruction requires considerable effort. The Changing Workforce demonstrates the value of a source readily accessible at public libraries and local historical societies. As students interpret and compare historical data about employment patterns in their communities, they will understand the impact industrialization had upon everyday people.

This resource kit contains a variety of classroom investigations, with learning opportunities for all ability levels. Several handouts introduce students to the assignments. Many of the activities suggest opportunities for students to combine history with math and computer technology. The kit also includes eleven individual 8" x 10" photographic reprints of turn-of-the-century workers from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin's Visual Materials Archives. These have been printed on heavy cardstock and are suitable for a bulletin board display.

The Changing Workforce requires between three and five class periods to complete.
