Voices from Vietnam tells the story of the war as it unfolded from the point of view of ninety-two Wisconsin men and women. They stand for the more than 57,000 Wisconsin residents who served in southeast Asia, of whom 1,239 lost their lives. Although the letters were collected from Wisconsin veterans, the stories they tell could no doubt be repeated by many of the more than 2.5 million Americans who served in Vietnam. Unlike film, memoirs, and formal histories, which are prepared with the benefit of hindsight, the letters in this book offer an immediacy not found in other formats. Compiled together here, they offer students an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of primary sources.
