Wisconsin Pre-1907 Birth Index

We've published a great new resource for genealogists. The Wisconsin pre-1907 birth index includes almost 1 million birth records dated between 1852 and September 30, 1907. The index also includes about 20,000 delayed birth entries, graciously provided by the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society.

Searching
You can search the index by Last Name, First Name, Full Birth Date, County and Birth Year. Last Name is required unless you search County and Year.

Results
Your search results include the person's name, birth month, day and year, County, Microfilm Reel number and Record Number. An Order button takes you to our online store where you can purchase a printed copy of the record. If you prefer to obtain a copy yourself, the Microfilm Reel and Record Number are included to assist you.

Search Tip
Last and First Name fields are "Starts With" searches. The Last Name field requires at least 3 letters. If you type "smi" in the Last Name field, you will get "Smiath" to "Smizinek." Include a single letter in the first name field to narrow your search. For example, adding "f" to the first name field produces 270 records, from "Smibitner, Franz" to "Smizinek, Franziska"

What's Next?
Marriage and Death entries will be added in coming months.

Waters, Program Officer, Scholarly Communication, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, opened the meeting with a broad overview of several issues and developments surrounding digital-asset management. Three program sessions followed on institutional policies, emerging federal policies, and the state of tools available to take on the role of digital-asset management."

Wisconsin Digital Archive Pilot Project

The Wisconsin Digital Archive Pilot Project is a collaborative effort involving the Wisconsin Reference and Loan Library, the Wisconsin Historical Society, and the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau. Its primary objective is to develop strategies for providing permanent electronic access to web-based Wisconsin electronic government documents.

Documents selected for preservation follow the Guidelines for Selecting Electronic Wisconsin State Documents Policy. The primary focus is to preserve documents that are considered "at-risk," meaning they are born and live only electronically on the Internet and display one or more of the following characteristics:

* It is prepared for a state agency by a private individual or organization that is supported wholly or partly by any funds appropriated by the State of Wisconsin.

* It reports and/or describes the activity of an agency, or of a subset of an agency. (e.g., annual reports, statistical tables or analyses)

* It is legislatively, judicially or administratively mandated.

* It presents the results of a state task force, commission, or of committee work.

Wisconsin state agencies are encouraged to assist in identifying URLs of online publications located on state agency website that are at-risk and should be digitally archived as part of their statutory obligation to participate in the Wisconsin Document Depository Program. This includes new content, content that has been significantly updated or revised, or content scheduled to be removed from a state agency website.
