Historical fragments: General Grant and Early Galena: J.H. Evans of Platteville, in Grant County, recalls how he first met Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), then a captain, in Galena, Illinois, before the Civil War. He describes Grant as an amiable man who was a friend to many, especially those in Galena. He also describes his subsequent meetings with Grant during the Civil War. (5 pages)
