Experiences of a Wisconsin Educator: This article consists of the Wisconsin portion of the memoirs of Josiah L. Pickard (1824-1914), who taught at Platteville between 1846 and 1859 and was state superintendent of public instruction, 1860-1864. Pickard discusses teaching conditions, teachers' wages, and the formation of the state teachers' association, as well as the politics of public school reform in mid-19th century Wisconsin.
