Schafer, Joseph, 1867-1941 "A Yankee land speculator in Wisconsin"

A Yankee Land Speculator in Wisconsin: This article details the relationship between Eastern politician and financier Henry Hubbard (1784-1857) and his agent in Wisconsin, Moses M. Strong (1810-1894), during the years 1836-1846. It reviews their initial contact, and describes how Hubbard financed $33,000 in land purchases, including some of James Doty's lots in Madison, the entire town of Arena in Iowa Co., and lands around Mineral Point in the Lead Region. The author explains how the Panic of 1837 dampened Hubbard's bank account but not his personal interest in Wisconsin, and summarizes the pair's occasional contacts in subsequent years. (15 pages)
