Hayes, Clara Lyon "William Penn Lyon"

William Penn Lyon, part 1: The first installment in a long biography of this Wisconsin Supreme Court justice (1822-1910). This article reviews his English ancestry and New York forebears before giving several anecdotes about his childhood in a Quaker family near Albany, N.Y. It includes excerpts from his memoir of moving to Walworth Co. in 1841 with his parents, where he worked as a school teacher before studying law with local attorneys. The article also discusses social events in Walworth and Racine counties, such as excitement over the California Gold Rush in 1849, local Whig and Republican Party affairs in the 1840s and 1850s, and Lyons’ anti-slavery and pro-women’s rights views.
