Kellogg, Louise Phelps, d. 1942 "The Fairchild papers"

The Fairchild Papers: This article describes the manuscripts created and preserved by the Fairchild family and given to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1925. The careers of Jairus Fairchild (1801-1862), mayor of Madison, and Lucius Fairchild (1831-1896), Civil War hero and governor, are summarized as they are documented in the collection. The article also concerns Republican Party politics, 1850-1900, the Peshtigo Fire, and veterans organizations including the Grand Army of the Republic and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion. Mention is also made of the family's business interests, travels, Lucius Fairchild's diplomatic career in Europe, and support for Carroll College and the Univ. of Wisconsin. (13 pages)
