Bale, Florence Gratiot "A packet of old letters"

A Packet of Old Letters: The author introduces and annotates a series of letters written in the 1830s by Susan Hempstead Gratiot (born 1797), wife of Henry Gratiot (1789-1836) who founded the town of the same name in Lafayette County. The letters discuss household matters, childhood illnesses, education, living conditions, religious sentiments, and the work of a mother on the Wisconsin lead mining frontier. The annotations summarize the career of Henry Gratiot as Indian agent, his premature death, and the later lives of his widow and children. (15 pages)
