Cover, Joseph Carman "Memoirs of a pioneer county editor"

Memories of a Pioneer County Editor: This essay by Grant County editor Joseph Cover (1819-1872) was among his manuscripts received in 1927. In it he recalls his childhood in Pennsylvania, where he was shunned for strong anti-slavery views. Coming to Wisconsin in 1851, he settled in Lancaster as editor of the Lancaster Herald. He describes its strong abolitionist stance during the 1850s, and recalls many details of local Republican politics during the party's earliest years. He also offers much advice on running a newspaper during politically tense times, and describes the effects of the Panic of 1857 on the local economy. It is unclear who Cover considered the audience for these private reflections to be. (19 pages)
