Forsbeck, Filip A., b. 1873 "New Upsala: the first Swedish settlement in Wisconsin"

New Upsala: The First Swedish Settlement in Wisconsin: Delafield and Chenequa: Gustaf Elias Marius Unonius (1810- ) came to the United States from Upsala, Sweden, to establish a new home for his family and to begin a more prosperous life. Unonius begins this set of memoirs detailing his time at an inn in Delafield on his way to Pine Lake, where he and his family settled and began farming near other Swedish settlers. Unonius describes the poor working conditions in Pine Lake as he chopped logs for a cabin home near the lake. Unonius details his family’s joy as he completes work on the frame for the cabin and begins work laying the floorboards and installing the wood-burning stove. He also describes his children’s time at school learning English and his encounters with other pioneer settlers and Indian tribes in the area. (20 pages)
