Schafer, Joseph, 1867-1941 "Editorial comment: Chancellor John Hiram Lathrop"

Chancellor John Hiram Lathrop: This biography on Lathrop (1799-1866) first describes his comprehensive education and career before focusing on his position as Chancellor of the newly established University of Wisconsin. The article details the legislative process involved in creating the University and describes several bills that determined how the new school would operate, including the Ryan Amendment and legislation specific to university management and the departments of instruction. During his tenure, Lathrop faced financial difficulties involving university funding that nearly forced the school out of existence. In 1858, Senator John Wesley Hoyt (1831-1912) introduced the Robbins report, which led to a 'regents' reorganization' of the university eight years later. The reorganization compromised Lathrop's vision for the school and essentially forced him to resign in 1859. (30 pages)
