Kellogg, Louise Phelps, d. 1942 "The rise and fall of Old Superior"

The Rise and Fall of Old Superior: Author Louise Phelps Kellogg (1862-1942) illuminates the founding, fall, and rebirth of the city of Superior in northern Wisconsin. Settled in 1854 on the banks of Lake Superior, the location quickly became an early American boomtown thanks to the construction of a ship canal at Sault Ste Marie. With the first settlers already building log cabins, Henry M. Rice (1816-1894), a delegate from the Minnesota territory, along with several other proprietors, invested in the city, laying the groundwork for phenomenal growth and a formal charter in 1858. Much of the early history of Superior comes from both the Chronicle newspaper and the writings of the wife of Eliab B. Dean, Sarah Fairchild, the sister of Lucius and Cassius Fairchild, both of whom would later become famous for their roles in the Civil War. She describes the height of Superior’s prosperity and the lows accompanying the financial Panic of 1857. The article contains information on the importance of steamboats and details an overland trip by Sarah Dean to St. Paul. (17 pages)
