Faherty, William Barnaby, 1914- "The life of John Lawler"

The Life of John Lawler: Author William B. Faherty examines the life of the entrepreneur John Lawler (1832-1891). Born in Carlow County in Ireland, Lawler came to America in his boyhood. Working for a railroad company in New York, he quickly rose through the ranks, and later amassed a fortune ferrying cargo across the Mississippi in riverboats. Playing a prominent role in both the Northwestern Packet Company and the McGregor Western Railroad Company during the 1860s, Lawler centered his activities around the town of Prairie de Chien. An opponent of slavery, he actively supported the Union’s cause during the Civil War. Following the conflict, Lawler helped establish St. John’s College, later the College of the Sacred Heart, in 1871, as well as St. Mary’s school in 1872. As the railroad pushed westward, Lawler helped to negotiate its passing through the Indian Reservation in the Dakota Territory. Always willing to aid Irish immigrants he supported Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) and the Land-Leaguers as well as the Irish Catholic Colonization Association. (24 pages)
