Titus, William A., 1868-1951 "The first concrete building in the United States"

The First Concrete Building in the United States: Author W.A. Titus (1868-1951) examines the efforts of Joseph Goodrich (1800-1867), who holds the distinction of constructing the first concrete building in the United States in what is now the town of Milton, Wisconsin. A native of Massachusetts, he traveled west in search of land in 1838, finally settling in the Milton region, then called Prairie de Lac. Goodrich initially built a makeshift store that doubled as his home. Though serving its purpose for a number of years, Goodrich ultimately sought to erect a larger, more secure building as his business expanded. With his property lacking sufficient wood and looking to defend it from possible Indian attack, Goodrich decided upon cement. However, he could only obtain cement, which had only been manufactured and patented in England twenty years before, by hauling it overland from New York. With information supplied by ‘Mrs. Post,’ a granddaughter of Joseph Goodrich, Titus goes on to describe the building and its various roles, as well as the importance of preserving it. Titus ends the article with some comment on Goodrich’s role in organizing Milton College and his election to the Wisconsin Legislature in 1856. (6 pages)
