The Naming of the "Four Lakes": The first installment of a study of Dane County names begins with the naming of the "Four Lakes," Lakes Kegonsa, Waubesa, Monona and Mendota, the origins of which was first debated in 1877 and at the printing of this article in 1945. The author divides the articles into 7 sections, focusing on the origins of each name at length using the accounts of Madison's first settlers. (18 pages)
