Frank, Michael, 1804-1894; St. Aubin, Ernest B.; "Documents: the autobiography of Michael Frank"

Documents: The Autobiography of Michael Frank: Author Ernest St. Aubin introduces the reader to the Autobiography of reformer, newspaperman, and politician, Michael Frank (1804-1894). The Autobiography deals with a range of topics. It begins with a history of Frank’s ancestry and a discussion of his father, before describing his own upbringing and education. He explains his move from New York to Wisconsin and covers much of his political career. Although not mentioned in great detail, Frank does speak about his association with numerous reform movements, including: Temperance, Abolition, Free-Soil, and Fourierist Socialism. The document discusses Frank’s role as publisher of the “Southport Telegraph,” the first newspaper in Kenosha County. In addition, the manuscript details his work establishing a free school in Southport (now Kenosha) while in the Territorial Council. Frank ends his Autobiography with a description of his work as a clerk in the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. Ernest St. Aubin was an acting head of the Manuscript Division at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. (41 pages)
