Kienitz, John Fabian, 1907- "Wilderness travelogue and Doty's loggery"

Wilderness Travelogue and Doty's Loggery: This article is based on the narrative of English Navy Capt. Lauchlan B. Mackinnon (1815-1877) who visited Wisconsin in May 1851. The author summarizes Mackinnon's trip up the Fox River from Green Bay to Lake Winnebago where he met James Duane Doty (1799-1865), and his subsequent overland trip (partly on plank roads) from Sheboygan through Fond du Lac and up the lake past Oshkosh to Doty's home at Neenah. The author quotes or paraphrases Mackinnon's detailed descriptions of travel conditions, wildlife, hunting grouse and other game, prairie soil, and his encounters with Indians (whose tribes are not specified). He concludes with a meticulous description of Doty's 1847 house, "The Loggery," including a floor plan. (13 pages)
