Marshall, Richard H. "Samuel Marshall, pioneer banker"

Samuel Marshall, Pioneer Banker: This straightforward biography tells how Marshall (1820-1907) came to Milwaukee in 1847 and in 1849 formed a partnership with Charles F. Ilsley (1827-1904) that grew into the Marshall and Ilsley Bank (now M&I Bank), one the state's most successful financial institutions. It also describes in detail his immigration to Wisconsin, how he faced the Panic of 1857, and how he helped stabilize the state government treasury during the Civil War. It quotes extensively from letters and diaries, and provides summaries of the bank's fluctuating assets through the second half of the 19th c. (15 pages)
