Shideler, James H. "The La Follette progressive party campaign of 1924"

The La Follette Progressive Party Campaign of 1924: This article begins by reviewing the various groups, from the Socialist Party to disaffected Democrats, which came together in the presidential bid of Robert M. La Follette (1855-1925). It analyzes the Progressive Party's goals and finances for the campaign, and the possibility that, as a third party, it might actually capture the White House or at least control the balance of power in Congress. It concludes by describing how the party coalition, out-spent and out-campaigned by the incumbent Republicans and divided by in-fighting, self-destructed in the final weeks before the election.
