Berthrong, Donald J. "Andrew Jackson Turner: 'work horse' of the Republican party"

Andrew Jackson Turner, "Work Horse" of the Republican Party: This biography details Turner's (1832-1905) involvement in journalism, local politics, and railroad expansion in the 19th century. Born in Schuyler Falls, New York, Turner moved to Portage in 1855, and established his career in the newspaper trade as typesetter, reporter, and editor of various Wisconsin newspapers, including the Wisconsin State Journal and Portage Record. He also issued the first Wisconsin State Register in 1861, which he published and edited for 17 years. Turner held several political offices from the 1860s-1890s, including state legislator, railroad commissioner, mayor of Portage, and county supervisor. The article also describes Turner's role in creating and promoting various railroad expansion projects, which included securing Portage as one of the terminals of the Portage and Superior Railroad Company. The piece concludes with a discussion of Turner's recreational activities, as well as his devout interest in preserving the frontier history of Wisconsin. (10 pages)
