Gambill, Edward L. (Edward Lee), 1936- "Mason C. Darling and the growth of Fond du Lac"

Mason C. Darling and the Growth of Fond Du Lac: This substantial essay traces the impact of Darling (1801-1866) on the settlement at the south end of Lake Winnebago that became the city of Fond Du Lac. It shows how Darling was induced into coming to Wisconsin Territory and became engaged in Wisconsin politics, focusing especially on the interplay of Territorial Era party factions and the methods Darling used to boost Fond Du Lac. It includes discussion of the selection of the capital, charges of corruption against James Duane Doty (1799-1865), and Darling's political evolution over the course of several decades. (11 pages)
