A Man From the Middle Border: Hamlin Garland's Diaries: A biographical sketch of Hamlin Garland (1860-1940), author of A Son of the Middle Border, who was born at Grand Coulee near Onalaska. The article chronicles his later life, taking care of his mother in West Salem, Wisconsin, his marriage to Zumline Taft in 1898, and the unique life experiences that came from spending half his life in the 19th century and the other half in the 20th.
