Albright, Claude "Dixon, Doolittle, and North: the forgotten republican votes"

Dixon, Doolittle, and Norton: the Forgotten Republican Votes: This essay discusses three conservative Republican Senators: James Dixon (1814-1873) of Connecticut, James Rood Doolittle (1815-1897) of Racine, Wisconsin, and Daniel S. Norton (1829-1870) of Minnesota. It focuses on their actions during the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) and describes their stances toward Southern reconstruction. The author argues that Dixon, Doolittle, and Norton each adhered to the basic Republican platform and counters a historical tradition that views these three senators as political renegades, Democrats, or National Union Party members.
