Zink, Steven D. "Glenn Frank of the University of Wisconsin: a reinterpretation"

Glenn Frank of the University of Wisconsin: A Reinterpretation. This article examines the tenure of University of Wisconsin President Glenn Frank (1887-1940) during the highly charged political atmosphere of the 1930s. Although beholden to Progressive Governor Phillip Fox La Follette (1897-1965) and the regents that La Follette had appointed, Frank tried to conciliate all parties and viewpoints. His initial success led to the construction of 16 new buildings, recruitment of prominent national figures, revamping of the curriculum, a new School of Education, and increased appropriations. But Frank's compromises with Republican Gov. Walter J. Kohler (1875-1940) led the liberal regents to perceive him as disloyal. Their discontent culminated, despite protest by the press about political interference in the university, to his departure. Issues of academic freedom, party politics, and the administration of public institutions are discussed in detail. (37 pages)
