O'Brien, Michael, 1943- "Young Joe McCarthy, 1908-1944"

Young Joe McCarthy: This long article about the youth of Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) is based largely on an extensive series of interviews with his friends and associates. It begins by chronicling his childhood on a farm at Grand Chute, Outagamie County, and his teenage jobs (after dropping out of high school) working with poultry and in a grocery store. It then discusses how McCarthy completed high school in a single year at the age of twenty before going on to Marquette University, where he majored in engineering and excelled as a boxer. Accepted to Marquette Law School, he became president of his law class and graduated in 1935. The article describes his private law practice and his tenure as 10th circuit court judge, his political intentions, and his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. It details how during the war he advanced his name and reputation in the Wisconsin press through devious and questionable behavior, in order to further his political ambitions, and describes his 1944 Republican primary campaign.
