Moranian, Suzanne Elizabeth "Ethnocide in the schoolhouse: missionary efforts to educate Indian youth in pre-reservation Wisconsin"

Ethnocide in the Schoolhouse: Subtitled “Missionary Efforts To Educate Indian Youth in Pre-Reservation Wisconsin,” this article reviews the attempts of Christian missionaries to educate Indian children before 1850. It examines the careers of Cutting Marsh (1800-1873), Samuel Mazzuchelli (1806-1864), Theodore Van Den Broek (1783-1851), Alfred Brunson (1793-1882) and other missionaries to educate children of the Menominee, Ojibwe, Sioux, and Ho-Chunk nations in white ways. It contrasts the practices of Protestants and Catholics, while admitting that both experienced the same difficulties of cultural differences, language barriers, and Indian reluctance to embrace the value of schools. The author explains the failure of early mission schools as the result of successful attempts by the Indians to maintain their indigenous cultures. (18 pages)
