Sylvander, Carolyn Wedin, 1939- "Fame and obscurity: the Baker brothers of St. Croix Falls"

Fame and Obscurity: The Baker Brothers of St. Croix Falls: Author Carolyn Wedin Sylvander examines the lives of two brothers, Ray Stannard Baker and his younger brother Harry Baker. Ray left St. Croix Falls to pursue education and to become a journalist and writer, working for the Chicago Record and McClure's Magazine before teaming-up with fellow muckraking journalists Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens to found The American Magazine. Ray also published several novels under the pen name David Grayson. Although Ray was groomed to take over his father's real estate business, Ray's younger brother Harry eventually took over the business after Ray refused to return to St. Croix Falls. Harry became a successful businessman, counting among his acquaintances Robert M. La Follette. The author contends that Harry's sacrifice to not leave home to pursue other ventures gave his brother Ray the freedom to be a famous writer. (16 pages)
