About the Wisconsin Historical Society Press

Publishers Since 1855

The mission of the Wisconsin Historical Society Press supports that of the Wisconsin Historical Society: to collect, preserve, and share stories about Wisconsin’s past.

The Wisconsin Historical Society published its first book, Volume I of the Wisconsin Historical Collections, in 1855. Ever since, we’ve been committed to connecting the people of Wisconsin with their past while illuminating the relevance of history in the present. We strive to publish well-researched, authentic history that helps readers of all ages explore their identity and their heritage.

Throughout our long history, we have explored the state's past in a variety of formats and styles, from research guides to the acclaimed six-volume History of Wisconsin series. Today we create publications of enduring value that appeal to a broad audience of general readers. They include

  • Lively narratives about interesting people, events, and places
  • A range of voices and stories that include and reflect all Wisconsin people
  • Topics that speak to our regional community but also reach far beyond our state borders
  • Publications for young readers and educators that bring history to life for a new generation
  • The quarterly Wisconsin Magazine of History, featuring intriguing articles and compelling images on our rich social, economic, and political history
