Platteville, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Carsten and Dora Hinners House (Platteville, Grant County) on the State Register of Historic Places on May 14, 2021.

The Carsten and Dora Hinners House, constructed in 1862 by trained mason, Archibald W. Bell is distinctive in Platteville for its architectural design and notable for its rarity as one of the few, intact, I-house buildings in the city.  The house is an early representative of the Federal style having a symmetrical façade with an accentuated front door with multi-pane sidelights and transom; multi-pane windows with stone sills and lintels; a 2-story, full-width front porch; and brick chimneys projecting from each end of the roof ridge.

In addition, the building’s two-room by one-room plan render it a clear representative of the I-house form.  The house is composed of a main block with an open porch, a rear one-story ell perpendicular to the main block, and a one-story side wing slightly recessed from the front façade.  The Hinners were farmers who settled in Platteville in 1862 and lived here until their deaths in 1904 (Carsten) and 1914 (Dora).  The mason, Archibald Bell, went on to become an attorney and later had a practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
