Archives Month is an annual celebration of the value of Wisconsin's historical records, the original documents that tell the stories of our families, communities, business and civic organizations, and government institutions. As part of this effort, the Wisconsin Historical Society and other archival institutions throughout the state hold programs and exhibits that brings attention to the rich historical record of Wisconsin and its people.

  • Personal Archiving Day
    Date: October 10, 2015

    Join the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Society of American Archivists Student Chapter, and archival professionals from throughout Wisconsin, for Madison's very first Personal Archiving Day! Bring your personal items (or questions about your personal items) from home in need of preservation – family photographs, home movies (in any format), casette tapes, scrapbooks, diaries, iPhones, Instagram feeds, external harddrives, and similar items – to the Madison Public Library and our archival professionals will tell you how to make sure these objects – and their contents – last for years to come. The event begins with a presentation on archives – and how they impact your life – at 12:15, and wraps with a Home Movie Day screening at 4:00. All attendees receive one (1) coupon for a free scoop of custard from Culver's! (Please note that our professionals will not be on site to appraise personal antiques.) 
  • Treasures of the WHS Archives

    In celebration of Archives Month, the Wisconsin Historical Society archives will be hosting an open house Wednesday, October 14th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Stop by to view rarely seen historical treasures from the Society’s archives. You’ll find examples from the collections that illustrate the story of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the American Civil Rights Movement, Hollywood, the history of Wisconsin, and more. Among the treasures you’ll see are a letter written by Thomas Jefferson, a draft of the Wisconsin state constitution from 1846, and an original script from the movie Casablanca (courtesy of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research).  Staff will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the items on display.
  • Faculty Open House

    Faculty are invited to drop in to meet our archivists and enjoy some homemade treats. Ask questions, explore the collections, and learn more about archive donations.
  • If walls could talk: Researching the History of your Home

    In celebration of Archives Month, the Wisconsin Historical Society archives will be hosting an open house Saturday, October 24th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Drop in during this time to the Society archives and discover examples from our research collections devoted to researching your home, community and the architectural spaces we live in.  Examples will include materials from the Society’s map, manuscript, government records and photograph collection. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and get you started researching your home or neighborhood.

  • Governor's Archives Awards Certificate Presentations

    The Governor's Archives Awards celebrate outstanding work with historical records in Wisconsin, and are awarded in three categories: (1) Archival Achievement, (2) Archival Innovation, and (3) Archival Advocacy. To celebrate this year’s winners of the Governor’s Archives Awards, each recipient has chosen a specific time and location to receive their awards. This year's presentations are as follows:
