chemist, agriculturist, professor, b. West Bloomfield, Mich. He graduated from Michigan Agricultural College (B.S., 1864), and pursued graduate studies at Harvard, Halle, and Berlin. In 1868 he became professor of agriculture and analytical chemistry at the Univ. of Wisconsin. In this capacity he organized and operated the University farm until 1880, when he became head of the chemistry department, a position he held until his retirement in 1907.
