Ingeborg Sidwell | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Quarter-length portrait of Ingeborg Sidwell wearing a patterned scarf, tied under her chin, a dark coat and eyeglasses. In 1943, she was working at the Wisconsin State Capitol as a scrubwoman. She was 79 years old and wanted to retire, but knew it would be difficult. She lost all of her money when the banks failed in the 1930s. When Governor Goodland vetoed the state employee's pension bill, she worried about what would happen, not only to herself but her coworkers. They were all elderly and most had medical issues. So, she sought out the governor and told him of the small salary she made, her many expenses and her small savings. She asked him to reconsider. Whether her chat with the governor made the difference is unknown. However, not long after their meeting, the governor sent a message to the Legislature asking that they override his veto, which they did. Ingeborg received a monthly pension of $14.70. She died in 1947 at the age of 84.
