Farmall B and No. 42 Combine Harvester Thresher Harvesting Flax | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Original caption reads: "I-2618-EE, I-2623-EE, I-2625-EE and I-2624-EE. Taken on the farm of Mr. Marvin Dyer, the IHC dealer of Falls City, Nebraska and Hiawatha, Kansas. His farm is five miles west of Falls City, Nebraska. Here is shown his B tractor and 42 combine with the pickup attachment working in flax. In this part of the country there is not much flax grown and there-fore is not considered in the government program, so it can be planted on idle land. here Mr. Dyer has planted 43 acres of flax, he has cut it with a binder leaving off the string and letting it go straight through the machine in windrows, after drying thoroughly he is picking it up as you see. The Flax is $1.54 per bushel and will make from to 15 to 18 bushels per acre here. This is pretty good for land that has been cut out of the farmers program. One thing that makes raising this crop so good is that rain on it when it is drying cannot hurt it, it is so full of oil. All our other crops spoil if rained on while drying. Flax can no be cut with the mower as it gives the combine too much tough roughage to handle. Of course, it can be done, but is not so good. In this field he started wit the mower and cut one round and changed to the binder. Flax has a very tough stalk."
