Brown Block
View across Capital lawn towards the corner building at 100 S. Pinckney, on the Brown or Bruen Block. The stores, from the left, are Sullivan & Heim, Blasius Pianos (the awning says Groves Piano Ware Rooms, J.W. Groves, Mgr.) and an awning that reads: "Dry Goods Clearance Sale of Shirt Waists." To the right of the clearance sale is the State Bank. There is a woman walking past the Sullivan and Heim building; a horse and buggy is moving down the street, piano packing cases are in front of the piano store, and several bicycles are parked in front of the State Bank. |

From Stanley C. Hanks Collection Notes, PH 6095: The State Bank building, erected in 1852 by Marshall and Ilsley at 7 and 9 S. Pinckney on a lot which cost $800, was the first bank organized under the general banking law of the state, and issued the first bank bill put in circulation. It opened its doors for business on the 1st day of January 1853, with a capital of $50,000. This building served its purpose until 1882 when it was removed and a modern building erected in its place. |
