A hand-colored etching of the shells of mollusks collected by members of the Perry expedition, described and named by physician and conchologist John Clarkson Jay (1808-1891). Figures 1 through 6 depict variations of the land snail Helix simodae, accepted name Euhadra peliomphala simodae, collected near Shimoda. Figures 7, 8 and 9 are also land snails, Helix perryi, accepted name Euhadra quaesita perryi, collected near Yedo (Tokyo). Figures 10, 11 and 12 are the pond snail Lymnea [sic] japonica, accepted name Radix japonica, also collected near Shimoda. Figures 13, 14 and 15 are Bullia perryi, accepted name Volutharpa perryi, and were collected from the Bay of Yedo (Tokyo Bay). Figures 16 and 17 depict Purpura sepentrionalis, accepted name Nucella lamellosa. Jay expressed doubt that this specimen was collected near Japan, as its usual range is in the northeaster Pacific from the Bering Strait to California.
