U.W. Madison Earth Satellite Project
Image shows seven men in a U.W. research lab posing with a life-sized model of a satellite. Professor Verner Suomi of the meteorology department led a team that constructed instruments that were to be included inside one of the U.S. Vanguard satellites. Suomi hoped to study the flow of heat from the Sun to the Earth and then back to space. The seven men are (left to right in the back): Professor Wayne Swift, Andrew Grondahl, Harry Miller, Charles R. Stearns (also of meteorology), William Hauser and E J. Romare. In the foreground is Professor Suomi, team leader. All men except Stearns and Suomi were with the College of Engineering. |
