Armistice Day Celebration
Armistice Day celebration (mock funeral of Kaiser Wilhelm II). Soldier identified is William Carlson, who was disabled by the chemical agent mustard gas and lost a lung. Military service records indicated he served until June, 1919, but for William Carlson to be present at the New Lisbon Armistice Day Celebration in November of 1918, it is assumed that he was sent home to Wisconsin due to his injuries sustained from exposure to mustard gas. Recovery from mustard gas exposure was a lengthy process and transport from France to the United States required three weeks, so while it is possible that he participated in the Oise Aisne Campaign in September and Meuse Argonne in October, most probably he was injured at the Aisne Marne campaign, July 30th - August 7th. He died at the age of 83 from emphysema related to war injuries. His brother, Nels Carlson, was killed the day before Armistice Day. |
