| A seated waist-up studio portrait of Ole K. Hanson, a sergeant in Company A, 15th Wisconsin Infantry in uniform. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He held residence in Madison, Wisconsin. On October 15, 1861 he enlisted in Chicago, Illinois and on November 15, 1861, he was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin. From September to October 1862 he served as Wagon Master. On May 27, 1864, during the fighting on Altoona Mountain near Dallas, Georgia (New Hope Church), he was listed as missing in action when he was left on the field and taken prisoner. He did not muster out with A Company. |

| "The Regiment's bravest man - wounded five times in the battle at Pickett's Mill (New Hope Church)." He not only survived his wounds, but also at least 3 months in Andersonville Prison. In April 1867, Wisconsin Governor Lucius Fairchild honored Ole K. Hanson with a promotion to the rank of Brevet Captain: "In recognition of distinguished gallantry . . . though wounded five times he refused to leave the field and finally fell into the hands of the enemy he having advanced so far that it was impossible for his regiment to reach and save him." Ole died in 1882 in Nebraska, from injuries received when he fell under a wagon. |
