The Battle of Sainte-Mihiel was fought from September 12-15. This photograph was among the first taken in the recently captured city. The kitchen here shown was photographed in the woods somewhere near the very heart of the captured salient of Sainte-Mihiel. Here is the record of its day's work on the first day the rolling kitchen moved northward in the wake of the fighting: Breakfast: The tenderest sirloin steak, smothered in onions, French fried potatoes, coffee and bread. This menu served the kitchen moved about twenty kilometers, then served the second meal. Lunch: Old fashioned beef stew, creamed potatoes, green peas, bread and butter and coffee. Another move to keep up with the swiftly advancing firing line followed, then the cook served Dinner: Boiled beef, mashed potatoes and brown gravy, cabbage, stewed prunes, hot biscuits and butter, coffee and Bull Durham. The vegetables were dug in a garden planted by the Germans. |
