Maple Sugaring

Maple Sugaring | Painting | Wisconsin Historical Society
Two men work at running sap from maple trees. Buckets are hanging beneath the sap spouts or "spiles" inserted into holes drilled in the trees. A team of horses is pulling a stone boat, the very low sled loaded with barrels holding the sap that one of the workers is dumping from the buckets. The other worker is carrying two buckets of sap suspended across his shoulders. The sugar shed is behind the men with smoke coming out of the chimney; this is where they empty the barrels of sap.
