![Full-length oval portrait of Ben Nelson [as written on the photograph backing; also written as Ben Nilson on Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20 and published roster: Rosters of Wisconsin Volunteers, Volume 1 (1886); also as Ben Nilsson on published roster: Wisconsin Volunteers: War of the Rebellion (1914)], a private in Company I, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Dane County, Wisconsin. On November 8, 1861, he enlisted in Wheaton, Wisconsin and December 20, 1861, he was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin at the age of 19. On May 8, 1862, he was absent on furlough in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. As of June 8, 1863, he was listed on the muster rolls as being absent in Eau Claire without leave. On May 23, 1864, he was detached to serve in the Brigade Provost Guard. From June through August 1864, he served at the Brigade headquarters.
