Note on back of card reads, "Taken in Ashland in 1896. I stood in the war. The more feathered are the Sioux. J.J. Doherty, Ashland" John J. Doherty was the donor of the postcard. cf. articles in The Ashland News, Sept. 5, 9, and 12, 1896.

Handwritten note on card and neg sleeve indicates that this was a Wild West Show stunt and not a real council.
