Gettysburg Hero
Statue of John L. Burns, the elderly citizen-hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, who fought with the 7th Wisconsin on July 1, 1863 and was wounded. A veteran of the War of 1812, Burns survived his Civil War combat to become a national hero and his carte-de-visite was highly prized. In 1903 the state of Pennsylvania honored Burns with this statue. The photograph, which looks north toward the equestrian statue of General Reynolds, also shows the appearance of the battlefield at the turn of the century. |
