STONE LINTELS, SILLS AND QUOINSSTONE DOOR SURROUND W/ SIDELIGHTS AND TRANSOMCOLONEL HORNEFFER OPENED GERMAN FREE SCHOOL IN HIS HOUSE IN 1854 "Originally the residence of Conrad Horneffer, proprietor of the first Washington House, this limestone building was also the site of the City's first school in 1864, the German Free School, which continued operating until 1932. German language was spoken here and for 30 years it was the only school in Cedarburg. Unusual detail is evident at the building's corners . Dressed quoins have been cut in such a way as to create the effect of a raised corner pilaster." A Walk Through Yesterday in Cedarburg |
