Additional Information: | Frank Hunholz was the builder. 2001- "Resting on a cut-stone foundation, this two-story, cream brick house contains pointed-arch window openings that feature cream brick window hoods with carved keystones and stone sills. Windows are modern, one-over-one, double-hung sashes; those on the rear block of the house lack window hoods. Fixed-sash, diamond-pane windows are found in the peak of the front and side gables. The building also features a bay window on the first story of the east facade and cornice brackets on the east and front facades. A wooden, front gable porch with turned balusters shelters the primary entrance. An article from the March 2, 1980 issue of the Milwaukee Journal describes rehabilitation efforts involving this and two neighboring structures (see the following two entries). All three properties were owned and rehabilitated by A.M. Chudnow, Joseph Chudnow and Aaron Tilton, who hired local historian H. Russell Zimmermann as their restoration consultant. The Chudnow law offices currently occupy 1119 W. Kilbourn Avenue. Rehabilitation work on this building included removing a first-story, front-facade picture window originally located to the left of the primary entrance. In addition, the two previously mentioned pointed-arch window openings were installed; these were modeled after those on the second story. Brick from the rear facade of the house was used for the windows and salvaged brick from demolished buildings was installed on the rear. Custom-designed double doors were installed in the primary entrance and the porch steps "were turned to go straight down." Although the original building permit was not available, it is known that this residence was owned in 1897 by an individual under the apparent surname of "Bloch," who constructed a rear addition measuring 14' by 15' by 12'. The addition's builder was Frank Hunholz. He and his two brothers, Henry and John G., were local carpenters and contractors. By 1937, Augusta La Varnweg owned the property and in 1951, it was purchased by attorney, Walter Schinz, Jr." - "Marquette Interchange, Milwaukee", WisDOT ID #1060-05-02, Prepared by Heritage Research (McQuillen) (2001). |
