| Additional Comments | THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING, DESIGNED IN THE ITALIANATE STYLE, WAS BUILT IN 1897. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR A BRICK TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. EMBELLISHING THE FACADE IS A BRACKETED METAL CORNICE. RED BRICK ARTICULATION ADDS ADORNMENT NOT ONLY TO THE AREA BENEATH THE CORNICE, BUT ALSO TO THE SEGMENTALLY ARCHED LINTELS ABOVE THE ELONGATED, SECOND-STORY WINDOWS. THIS STRUCTURE WAS BUILT UPON THE REMAINS OF THE 1857 STONE TOAY AND ALLEN BUILDING DAMAGED BY FIRE IN 1897. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THE HISTORICAL NAMES OF THIS BUILDING INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: ALLEN BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A); JOHN R. TOAY GROCERY STORE (SEE BIB. REF. C); AND ZWEIFEL'S GROCERY (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE GROCERY STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS SITE FROM 1897 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Built by Toay & Allen to replace one destroyed by the fire of 1897; the earlier building had been built by them as well. Philip Allen and John Toay came to Mineral Point from Cornwall in 1842. Builders, masons, and plasterers, they were partners in the building trade and in the grocery and boot and shoe business. they also built the Mineral Point Railroad Depot.
