1903 - Packer Legend Mike Michalske Born
On this date Green Bay Packer Hall of Famer Mike Michalske was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Michalske played guard for the Packers from 1929 to 1935 and 1937. He also played professional baseball for the New York Yankees in 1927-1928, before joining the Packers. Michalske was a two-time All-Pro selection in 1931 and 1935, known as "Iron Mike" for his great stamina and durability. 1953 - Wayne Morse Sets Filibuster Record
On this date (and including April 25, 1953) Wayne Morse, Republican Senator from Oregon, broke Robert LaFollette's record for the Senate's longest filibuster. Morse, who was born in Wisconsin, held the floor for 22 hours and 26 minutes in his attempt to stop Tidelands Oil legislation. LaFollette held the floor for 18 hours and 23 minutes to oppose a 1908 currency bill. Morse lost his title to Strom Thurmond in 1957 when Thurmond set the current record of 24 hours and 18 minutes trying to stop Civil Rights legislation. [Source: United States Senate]
1977 - Morris Pratt Institute of Spiritualism Moves to Waukesha
On this date the Morris Pratt Insititute, dedicated to the study of Spiritualism and Mediumship, moved from Whitewater to Waukesha. Founded in 1888 and incorporated in 1901, it was one of the few institutes in the world that instructed spiritualists. These were people "who believe as the basis of his or her religion, in the communication between this and the Spirit World by means of mediumship and who endeavors to mould his or her character and conduct in accordance with the highest teachings derived from such communication."
