1862 - (Civil War) 9th Wisconsin Light Artillery Battery Mustered In

The 9th Wisconsin Light Artillery Battery mustered in at Burlington, Wisconsin. It spent most of the war in the far West guarding forts and trains in Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas. In 1864 it returned east to Missouri and Arkansas and saw limited combat. In three years it lost only six men, all to disease.

1941 - Death of Joseph Schafer

On this date Dr. Joseph Schafer, Superintendent of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, died. Schafer served in this position for 21 years and was regarded as an expert on agricultural development in the state.
